When it comes to paint projects, it is important to use the proper techniques and tools to achieve a professional outcome. Read on to discover which painting tools pair best with each home improvement project.
Brushes: One of the most common paint tools are brushes. To properly utilize a brush, hold it by the base, just above the bristles. It is important to dip only half of the bristles into the paint bucket to avoid paint from getting onto the handle or clumping and drying where the bristles are affixed to the handle. Paint brushes are most commonly used to start the painting process by “cutting-in,” as well as smaller painting projects like trim.
Rollers: For larger surface areas, using a roller and tray is ideal in order to create an even layer of paint. There are two widely used techniques, the “N” roll and the “W” roll. As the names suggest, each roll starts by creating a letter with the roller, and then filling in the left over empty spaces. A 2 foot surface area is usually covered using either of these techniques, and most useful for bigger painting projects.
Extension Pole: For challenging paint jobs like ceilings, use an extension pole to lengthen your existing roller. These poles come in various sizes up to 36 inches, measure the height of your ceiling and go from there. Extension poles made of sturdy materials like metal or wood work best. Often you can purchase an adjustable extension pole that can be shortened or lengthened depending on the task at hand.
Sponging: This technique can add subtle texture and depth to any room in your home. Start by applying a solid color base utilizing a brush and roller. Next, dip a sponge in water and squeeze out the excess. Using the damp sponge, dip into the glaze of your choice and then dab the excess glaze onto a piece of newspaper. Use the sponge to blot glaze over your wall in small, square sections, adding extra glaze to the sponge as necessary. To get a finished look, remove excess glaze from the sponge and use the freshly dampened sponge to remove excess glaze.
