If you are into decorating, then you may have heard of coving.  If this is something that you are looking into, then you will definitely want to make sure that you choose the right materials for the project.  There are a few that are commonly used, and they each have their own benefits and advantages.  Take a closer look at them.

Polystyrene

First, we have polystyrene.  This is a coving material that is often used when you are on a strict budget.  It is cheap, lightweight, and easy to use if you have experience.  The downfall is that it this is usually the lowest quality material, which may make you a bit apprehensive when it comes to using it.  Even after you paint it, you will be able to tell that it is simply just a cheap alternative to some of the better options out there.  It is also very prone to damage, which is something you must be careful with.

Plaster

Next, there is plaster.  Plaster can be used a lot, because it offers a smooth finish that will be great when it comes to working with details and patterns.  Most people find that it is one of the best materials to use, but some people will claim that it is too heavy for them.  Others may say that it is too brittle to effectively work with.  You really just have to be careful when you work with plaster, but it can be a quality product to use if you turn to professional help with it!  After all, it offers quality and durability over the course of time.

Hardened Polyurethane

This is one of the newer products that has come into the market.  If you are working on a coving project, then you have probably heard of hardened polyurethane.  It can be used as an affordable and lightweight alternative to plaster, but it doesn’t have the cheap effects of the polystyrene.  It really does seem to be the best of both worlds.  Just remember, it may not work well for every decorating project.  It is really important for you to understand when it is okay to use this material and when it isn’t.  The best way to do this is by asking a professional or having a chat with a store worker at the shop you’re purchasing the coving from who knows their stuff!

Don’t Underestimate the Work Involved

Coving, or even just choosing the type of materials for the project, is no easy task!  You will find that it is difficult for you to do as a DIY project, and it may make the most sense for you to call on the expert help of a professional to get the job done right.  By all means, if it is something that you have experience with, you will be able to take care of it on your own.  If you aren’t sure, then you won’t want to risk it.  It is a difficult task, and you don’t want to underestimate the amount of work that is involved with it.  Hiring someone may be the best move you can make, even if you do opt to pay for the coving you prefer yourself, at least then you’re guaranteed to have it looking brilliant, or if not there will at least be someone to hold accountable.
